Headline: New Women’s Shelter Inaugurated to Support Victims of Violence
A new state‑funded women’s shelter has been inaugurated in the provincial capital to provide refuge and legal support to victims of domestic violence and harassment. The facility, operated by the social welfare department, includes residential rooms, a medical unit, counselling services and a legal aid desk. Officials say that the shelter can house dozens of women and their children at a time, offering them a safe environment while their cases are processed.
Speaking at the ceremony, the provincial minister for social welfare emphasized that the government’s goal is not only to provide emergency protection but also to help survivors rebuild their lives. Vocational training classes in tailoring, computing and beauty services will be offered so that residents can become financially independent. Partnerships with local businesses are being explored to arrange internships and job placements for those ready to move out.
Women’s rights activists present at the event applauded the initiative but stressed that shelters alone are not enough. They called for stronger implementation of existing laws, faster prosecution of offenders and improved awareness campaigns so that women know their legal rights. The minister assured them that a dedicated helpline, linked directly to the shelter and police control rooms, would soon be launched to ensure timely response to distress calls.
